A Burlap Basket originated from a true love story. In November 2003, Jean, a divorced Mom of five, managing
an active retirement center in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. After a long day of driving fence posts on her land with her Dad was contacted on the internet by a man, James, a salesman, living in Central Texas, a divorced Dad of three. They communicated back and forth for several weeks and finally decided to meet in person.
After the couple met face to face they decided they wanted to date exclusively.
Considering the 300 miles between them, they needed to stay in touch. They were able to find creative ways of communicating their love for one another and mail became a major part of their courtship which is
how"A Burlap Basket" was born.
One day, Jean was shopping for something special to send to her love. She came across a small and simple angel made of wood. (The original Angel is pictured below and left.) James had always called Jean his angel and she wanted to send the piece to him by Mail in a very special way. A way he would always remember his angel. She thought and thought and finally came up with an idea. She made a shipping label addressed to James, laminated it then placed the correct amount of
postage on the label. Once attached to one of the angels wings she then placed it in the outbox to be mailed. The postman picked it up, smiled, shrugged his shoulders and into the US mail system the angel went. James received the angel in it's original form and to their surprise, it went through the US Mail system without any problems.
Who would have ever thought you could mail something without the typical packaging methods.
Jean decided to purchase a burlap bag, if USPS would deliver an angel without a box or envelope surely they would deliver "A Burlap Bag" in the same manner.
She took the bag, placed an item inside and repeated the process of giving it a label with postage and gave it to the mail man. He took it and
again was delivered to James without event.
Because they lived 300 miles apart, on their travels to and from they began stopping and searching areas of Texas for items unique only to Texas. Together they wanted to share their love and their "Love of Texas" with the world. They started an on-line business shipping Texas made products, unique only to Texas and deliverd these items in a unique and fun fashion "Texas Style". In a burlap bag, hence the name, A Burlap Basket.
The couple were married on July 16, 2005 and made their home in Central Texas. A very large misunderstanding between the couple took place, and their communication broke down. Two years, 9 months and 12 days after exchanging vows, the couple met in divorce court.
The whole concept of A Burlap Basket became a bitter memory for them both and the website went down. A Burlap Basket, its products, its travels, the website, the love and everything associated with A Burlap Basket was gone. Email contact, here and there between the two only displayed James' love for Jean and Jean's disappointment in the way the marriage had turned out.
But not forever! On July 16, 2008, what would have been their third wedding anniversary, A Burlap Basket was in need of a re-birth. The dream, the concept, their deep rooted love for one another and their "Love of Texas" was on its way back. As Jean began developing the new website, a strong force began to play an important part of completing the dream they both had years before. The day after it was published on the internet, Jean received an email from James telling her how good it looked. This brought tears to Jean's eyes and an empty heart began to fill with emotion. By the beginning of November 2008, James began a rescue attack and plucked Jean from the deep dark pits of withdrawal and on December 30, 2008 James and Jean were remarried. The Angel continues to reside in their home.
Their "Love of Texas" continues to grow with more meaning and much deeper feelings.
